Aim
Aging of society is a demographical phenomenon perceivable in the majority of highly developed countries. Due to the consequences of getting older, many elderly people require to be taken care of, which may put a strain on the caretakers to various degrees. The aim of the study is to assess the degree and analyse chosen circumstances of the strain put on caretakers, in accordance with the COPE-scale of the Negative Impact.

Material and methods
The study group holds 120 informal caretakers of the elderly and 120 people who received care, from both urban and rural areas. In order to assess the degree of strain of caretakers, there was used the Negative Impact of Caregiving Scale, as a part of COPE- index questionnaire. In order to look into functional capabilities of care receivers the study employed ADL and I-ADL scales.

Results
The age of informal caretakers varied from 20 to 87 years (M= 52.5; SD=13.53). Strains were noticed in 23.3% of caretakers, with a particular impact of those who were male and were taking care of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease (p<0.05). The more capable the care receiver, the less negative the impact of the care on the caretaker (statistically significant in the case of the correlation of the IADL scale and the COPE questionnaire, p<0.05).

Conclusions
Caring for an elderly person is a burden for an informal carer, this burden is intensified among carers of people with Alzheimer’s disease, male carers and people caring for the elderly with a lower degree of self- -service capacity.
