Microbiological tests to diagnose Candida infections in patients of hospice home care program – in the light of new research on intestinal permeability – were considered insufficient. Two new tests were evaluated: urinary D-/L-arabinitol ratio and sugar absorption test. Invasive candidiasis was diagnosed in 43% and intestinal hyperpermeability in 46% of cases. Relationships among intestinal hyperpermeability versus age, antibiotics and the cleansing mixture were proved statistically significant. Positive relationship was found between candidiasis and hypercarbohydrate diet. Both tests are useful and may be performed at home environment by hospice nurses.
