Dear Colleagues, After the President of the Republic of Poland named our university the Calisia University last year, elections for new university authorities took place in June 2024. We are very pleased that the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal was elected Rector by a huge majority of votes from the university community. We are particularly pleased that one of the reasons for obtaining the broad support of the entire university community in the process of the Rector’s election was also the publishing activity and development of our journal, which is currently among the most valued Polish scientific journals with one of the highest scores in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. After obtaining the university statute and electing new authorities, we plan to reform the journal in the coming months. We hope that the next issue, at the end of this year, will introduce further changes to our functioning. The editorial team is particularly proud that, unlike at the beginning of our activity, we receive more and more manuscripts for publication, not only from our university, and not only from Poland, but also from various countries around the world. More and more often, the most eminent scientists from around the world publish in our journal, including Professor Jurgen Rehm. Also in this issue, we host his original collective work assessing the development of public health research on alcohol-related diseases (see pp. 12-16). This problem is particularly important for Poland. In previous issues, we published a series of articles analysing the development of the situation in this area in Poland. We are particularly satisfied that the research conducted by our University in the field of tobacco and alcohol, published in the last issues of the journal, has become the basis for the first legal decisions made by the government and the Minister of Health, the aim of which is to return to the implementation of the most important public health programs to reduce the health consequences of drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes. It is worth recalling that, according to the latest WHO reports, these two groups of diseases attributed to alcohol and tobacco lead to approximately 90,000 preventable deaths each year. We would like to draw the readers’ attention to the fact that this issue contains several works devoted to nutrition. We pay particular attention to the recommendations for the treatment of obesity prepared by the Polish Society of Dietetics (see pp. 22-47). The next group of publications included in this issue are publications on the health consequences resulting from the coronavirus epidemic in Poland, which ended a year ago worldwide. Manuscripts on the coronavirus are a continuation of numerous publications in this field from previous issues of the journal. Finally, we are pleased to note that in Poland there has been a return to the expansion and intensification of the sanitary and epidemiological system, which was so important for the health of Poles in previous decades. We note that the Chief Sanitary Inspector (Minister of Public Health) has been appointed – Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski – who has made significant contributions to controlling the coronavirus pandemic in Poland. We encourage you to read the presented publications and to submit manuscripts for publication in upcoming issues.
